Gen Z is much more than a paradoxical generation. It is a set of voices and ideals that is redefining social, economic and environmental norms.

Gen Z is a fascinating generation that is often described as “paradoxical”, but is it really?

On the one hand, Gen Z stands out for its commitment to social and environmental causes. Aware of the challenges facing our planet, this generation aspires to a more equitable and environmentally-friendly world. The movement against “fast fashion” is a striking example. Zoomers are questioning the practices of the fashion industry, demanding more ethical and sustainable standards. However, this social and environmental consciousness must coexist with the consumerist desire inherent in this generation. Zoomers have grown up in the age of technology and the Internet, where everything is just a click away. They are accustomed to instant gratification and the ability to satisfy their desires in an instant. This duality between their social conscience and their consumerist desire creates an internal conflict that pushes them to find a happy medium.

However, the label “paradoxical” doesn’t do justice to Gen Z’s diversity. In fact, this generation is so diverse that it’s made up of many internal communities, each with its own struggles and aspirations. Body positivists, environmentalists, feminists, mental health advocates, and many others can be found within Gen Z. What’s more, each individual can belong to more than one of these communities, reflecting the complexity of their identity.

A key element that distinguishes Gen Z from its predecessors, such as the millennials, is its collective spirit. Whereas millennials were often perceived as an individualistic generation, aspiring to personal success, Zoomers aspire to create global societal change. This desire is evident not only in their consumption habits, but also on social networks. Indeed, unlike millenials who were often content to react to publications, Zoomers are much more active and creative on social networks. They publish, share and campaign for their causes with boundless energy. This activity is particularly visible on platforms like Twitter, where they express themselves and influence public discourse.

Ultimately, Gen Z is much more than a paradoxical generation. It is a set of voices and ideals that is redefining social, economic and environmental norms. Its impact on our ever-changing world is undeniable, and it will be exciting to see how it continues to shape the future.

But as Gen Z ages, the question is which behaviors it will retain over the years, and which will fade. Will the Alpha generation, which follows it, pick up the torch or fall back into the ways of previous generations, adopting a logic that is more individualistic than communitarian?
